Career
David Yates qualified as a Solicitor and was commissioned into the Army Legal Corps in 1989. After an infantry attachment with 1/2 Ghurkha Rifles in Belize he completed legal staff appointments in both Germany and Northern Ireland. During this period he assisted soldiers and their families with their personal legal problems. He undertook “Flying Lawyer” duties in Northern Ireland and also headed the Army’s Criminal Injuries Compensation Cell, where he helped soldiers recover compensation for the injuries they sustained whilst on active duty. He was awarded an MBE in December 1997.
On promotion to Acting Lieutenant Colonel in 1997 he served as Commander Legal Headquarters 1st (United Kingdom) Armoured Division in Herford Germany, before moving to Cyprus as the Command Legal Adviser (Army). While in Cyprus he was appointed as a Judge of the Court of the Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia. David returned to the UK in 2001 as Chief of Staff to the Director Army Legal Services before undertaking an appointment as Legal Adviser at the Directorate Intelligence Corps.
Promoted to the rank of Colonel in 2005 David then served as Commander Army Legal Assistance based in Bielefeld, Germany with responsibility for overseeing the provision of legal advice to all soldiers and their families serving overseas in relation to their personal legal problems. In 2006 he moved to the Army Prosecuting Authority, initially as Colonel Prosecutions in Germany and then in the UK. Here he was responsible for the prosecution of the full range of criminal offences from minor military matters to the more serious offences including manslaughter.
In 2009 he attended the Royal College of Defence Studies in London. Here he successfully completed a Master of Arts with Distinction in International Relations from King’s College London. He was promoted to Brigadier in January 2010 and appointed Brigadier Operational Law. David retired from the Army at the beginning of 2012. He now applies the vast amount of knowledge and experience he gained during his very successful military career to assisting members of the Armed Forces and their families with their personal legal problems.
David maintains his close links to the Armed Forces as he is married to a serving Royal Army Medical Corps officer.
